MIHI 401: Foundations of Hui Process & Meihana Model

Hauora Māori Workshop | 3-Hour Intensive | RACS-Aligned

This workshop is 3 CPD Hours and counts towards CAPE requirements

On Thursday 11 February at 9am we will have a half-day workshop facilitated by the Māori/Indigienous Health Innovation (MIHI) department at the University of Otago.

Course Outline 

Overview

MIHI 401 introduces surgical trainees and Fellows to the foundational frameworks underpinning culturally safe and competent hauora Māori, using surgical cases as the context throughout. Through Hui Process and Meihana Model, learners explore the sociohistorical determinants of Māori health — colonisation, racism, migration, marginalisation — and their impact on whānau wellbeing and surgical outcomes. The workshop teaches hauora Māori, not surgical skills; surgical cases provide the clinical setting in which these frameworks are applied.

Learning Outcomes

By completion, participants will be able to:

1) Apply Hui Process and the Meihana Model when engaging Māori patients and whānau in surgical care (Cultural competence and cultural safety; Communication; Collaboration and teamwork)

2) Analyse the Meihana dimensions — ahua, tikanga, whenua, whānau — in surgical patient assessment and management (Medical expertise; Judgement and clinical decision making)

3) Explain how colonisation, racism, migration and marginalisation shape Māori surgical access, presentation and outcomes (Health advocacy; Scholarship and teaching)

4) Identify their own biases, prejudices and stereotypes, and describe how these affect surgical decision-making for Māori patients (Cultural competence and cultural safety; Professionalism)

5) Describe practical actions that promote cultural safety and work toward eliminating inequity within their surgical team and service (Cultural competence and cultural safety; Leadership and management; Health advocacy)
